Can Vitamins Cure Disease? Some say it can. Well, this raw fruit has the vitamins!
What is Baobab Fruit Powder?
Baobab fruit powder is a pale powder that dehydrates naturally inside the fruits of the baobab tree (Adansonia digitata). The fruit is simply separated from the seeds and sieved before packing. It is not pasteurized, heat extracted, freeze dried or concentrated like so many other fruits. Therefore, no nutrients are lost and the powder remains whole and unprocessed.
What are Baobab's Reported Key Nutritional Properties?
With an ORAC of over 650/g. baobab fruit powder has an antioxidant level double that of the Acai fruit pulp, Goji berries, and more than six times that of cranberries, blueberries and pomegranates.
Adequate levels of dietary fiber in the diet can help maintain a healthy digestive tract as well as decrease internal inflammation. Baobab contains over 50% total dietary fiber-higher than all “super fruits”. The total fiber is split into 75% soluble fiber and 25% insoluble fiber. Pectin is one source of fiber in baobab and has been reported to have a role in reducing total and LDL cholesterol. There has also been interest in the potential gut health benefits of pectin and it is said to enhance the prebiotic bacteria in the large intestine. Baobab is reported to have pectin content of about 56.2g/100g. The pectin in this fruit could also have a role in formulations as a gelling, thickening, or agent stabilizer.
Baobab fruit powder contains 2120 mg/100 g of potassium. That is almost six times higher than a banana, frequently recommended for its potassium content. Potassium is important for many aspects of health including the nervous system and muscle function. Since potassium loss can occur through sweating, baobab’s high potassium content may be of particular interests to makers of sports and fitness products.
Magnesium is required for normal energy metabolism, muscle function, and for bone and tooth structure. Baobab has a magnesium content above that of bananas, apricots, peaches and apples. At 144.5mg/100g this amazing fruit powder is a rich natural source of magnesium, a mineral that has been linked to bone and heart health in addition to lowering high blood pressure.
Vitamin C:Vitamin C plays an important role in protecting cells and keeping them healthy. Baobab powder contains more Vitamin C than so many other fruits known for high Vitamin C content including kiwi, strawberry, orange and grapefruit.
Baobab fruit powder is one of the few plant sources of calcium which is of particular interest to makers of products for vegetarians and vegans. When compared to other fruits such as apples, apricots, bananas and peaches, Baobab shows a higher calcium content as well as being reported to have higher levels other than other “super fruits” such as blueberries, cranberries and pomegranates.
